Go ahead and call me cold-hearted but I don't really care. This is a little commentary on the mad dash to go get flags, stickers, and other little nicknacks with something about America on it.
I am really sorry people died on September 11th in the attacks. But why do people keep saying "the WTC attacks?" Hello! The Pentagon was attacked too and people died there. Did anyone seem to care? No. Were they selling before and after pictures of the Pentagon? No. They weren't. And what is with all this "We have to love New York" mess? I don't love New York. I never have and I doubt I ever will. The only reason I would step a foot in New York would be to go see Saturday Night Live.
But I think this American flag bullshit has gone too far. Let's hang it in our car, let's put it on a sticker. It has REALLY gone too far when I'm getting e-mails to buy American flag berets for $5. Aren't berets French? I am tired of having the obligatory September 11th flag on everything I buy. For pete's sake there was an American flag on the cap of my Shasta bottle.
Also, we're paying millions and millions of dollars to these people's families because of their lost relatives. Look, millions upon millions of people die everyday but we don't donate to every one of their families. And don't sit here and try to assign importance of death. Example: "Well their death was more important because it was terrible." You can't assign importance to death.
Tomorrow if someone's father died and that meant the mother had to go to work and put her kids in daycare, people all over the world wouldn't contribute to the children's scholarship funds. So why do it to these other people's children? Because it's politically correct? Because you think it will buy you into heaven? Or will it help you sleep better tonight knowing you "did your part" to make America come together?
I'm not against giving to charity, but come the hell on...this is getting a bit ridiculous. I'm not really apathetic to these people but we have got to draw the line somewhere. Just because I don't love New York, I don't fly a flag, and I don't give to other people's scholarship fund doesn't mean I'm "with the terrorists" or "Un-American." I'm just tired of blaming EVERYTHING in the natural world on September 11th.
But of course...that's just my opinion. And while it's a good one, it's not the only one.
